CASE BOOK NOW READY!

You can now get a copy of the new 2009-2012 Case Book. I'll keep a link on the side bar for your use.

For the fun of it I've posted the old and new Case 75 that is key to the understanding of new Rule 18. Take a look at the two and see how the new rule works as compared to the old. The outcome is the same but there are some differences to note.

  1. The most striking difference between the new Case 75 and the old is how Rule 16 works. You will notice that they changed the diagram so that the starboard luffed more slowly to comply with Rule 16 as she sailed to the mark. In the old Case 75 Rule 16 was turned off so starboard could change course more sharply. Now her luff must be made just like anywhere else on the course.

The main change I see here is when you have several boats outside you as Starboard you will not be able to force your hand and get as much room. You need to be concerned about breaking Rule 16 as you approach the mark. In effect, I think all you will be able to hope for is “mark-room” when there is more than one boat outside even though you are right of way boat.

However, this will only apply if you need to change your course to make a tactical rounding. If you are sailing a straight course that takes you wide of the mark, then the give way boat will have fouled you if you need to alter course to avoid her by either rule 10, as in the case of Case 75 or by Rule 11 if the other boat is also on starboard.
