Rule 18 Scenario 6

Answer the questions as a starting mark as given in the question, then answer the same questions assuming it is a finish mark.

This scenario was right out of the case book. I've attached ISAF Case 28 from the 2009-2012 Cases for your reference, and it explains the rules involved better than I could. As for the case where it is a finish, Rule 18 does not apply per 18.1(a) since they are on opposite tacks on a beat to windward.

  2. Er, on the finish (which I take to be upwind by the diagram), if Yellow sails on past the mark and goes home, shouldn't she be scored DNF instead of DSQ?

Likewise, isn't she DNS on the start rather than DSQ?

  3. Ah yes Radio newbie. I think I see that now. Yellow breaks 28 but she is scored DNS and DNF.

Not the first time I have made that error.

OK With Dick Yellow breaks 28 but you could not score DNF if you scored DNS.
It is obvious if you do not strart you cannot finish!
    Yellow will only score DNS.

  5. To respond to Hent's comments.

I think we are to consider the scenario as two separate situations.

First as a starting mark in which case yellow is scored DNS, as Radio Newbie says.

Then a second separate and different race situation at an upwind finish line where yellow would be scored DNF.

I also think that you can meet the definition of "finish" regardless if you have not started properly or sailed the course properly. If that is wrong someone needs to correct me before I make a scoring mistake.

BISF is a excellent blog, too! I find the discussions very interesting, indeed.

But for my next contribution I will try to read the scenario correctly! ! ! ! !
